Tanah Teduh and I…

It has been a pleasant task to work on the 2 hectares land, with lush and luxuriant trees growing in the eastern part of the site and on the dale in the west.

The first thing I decided when I began working here was to keep as many original trees as possible, and to make an optimal use of the land contour. I also use the existing ponds on the west as the wastewater processing facility and water catchment area. The existing bodies of water also serve as aesthetic elements in the complex.

I then proposed for the government of the special capital territory of Jakarta to simplify their street plan to enable us to keep the land with the existing trees intact. Some of the houses in the complex share a communal parking lot to maximize the verdure.

The site has two main views; one of them having the lake as the focal point, and another the existing trees, forming a kind of inner garden.

I have been fortunate as the site’s owner let me choose the architects to work on the project. I thus selected competent architects who would be able to collaborate well in the project.

I hope the project can serve as a model for future developments that consider the nature and uses the surrounding nature as an integrated part in the design.

Principal Designer, Andra Matin

The Architects

A true first in Indonesia, Tanah Teduh is the product of nine of Indonesia’s best architects, led by the renowned Andra Matin. Chosen for their visionary work, the architects built one-of-a-kind homes that emphasize Indonesian contemporary design and revolutionize the concept of environmentally friendly living in one of Southeast Asia’s most bustling cities.

Focused on aesthetic as much as function, the architects created homes that are like no other in the country. Each architect was allowed to create their own design, ensuring each home at Tanah Teduh has its own individual character, while adapting to property’s features and using similar colours and local materials.

Beneath The Shadow

When was the last time a developer looked you in the eye and told you that the environment came  first, that his architects didn’t want to cut down trees so they designed exclusive, innovative and environmentally-friendly houses around them. Or that the revolutionary neighborhood would stand as an example of how Jakartans can use architecture and simple, effective use of natural elements like trees, sunlight, wind, land contour, and a natural drainage lake to create an environmentally-friendly neighborhood that proudly promotes Indonesia by celebrating its history and natural resources.
